We share our deep sorrow at the news about unmarked graves that are being discovered at former residential schools across Canada. We offer heartfelt condolences to survivors, their families and all our fellow Indigenous peoples across the country who are now mourning these tragic losses. We wish to acknowledge the courage, resilience and ongoing healing of survivors.
We encourage everyone in all communities to take a moment and reflect on these devastating discoveries and the relentless trauma Canada’s Indigenous peoples have experienced. We encourage all those in leadership in the community, various governments and other agencies to remember each of us has a role and responsibility in advancing truth and reconciliation. We are glad of the Provincial Declaration of Commitment to Cultural Safety and Humility, Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action, and United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People, and while the words of sorrow, care and calls are action are received thankfully. It cannot just be words, it must be real action that is when the real healing will occur. Let’s not just talk about it, make promises and keeping saying we are sorry. Let’s see these words in real actions.
So we encourage and inspire everyone to do their part no matter what, even just to offer words of love and care to survivors to write your MP, or MPP to demand that they put action to the words of these various agencies who are making statements and promises so that the truth, and to work towards healing leads to real reconciliation.
